An educational video about the production of cranberries here in the lower mainland (BC Canada)

Cranwest produces cranberries for Ocean Spray Juice Co.

Cranberry History:
Cranberries are actually one of the most unique fruits in the world. In fact, it's only one of three fruits that are native to North America. They are a wild fruit that grow on long-running vines in sandy bogs and marshes. Mostly in the northeast, but also in other parts of North America, like Wisconsin and the Pacific Northwest. It was Native Americans who first took advantage of cranberries. They mixed deer meat and mashed cranberries to make pemmicana-survival food. They also believed in the medicinal value of cranberries--long before science discovered the cranberry's beneficial properties! Medicine men would use cranberries in poultices to draw poison from arrow wounds. They also used the rich red juice of the cranberry as a natural dye for rugs, blankets and clothing. Legend has it that the Pilgrims served cranberries at the first Thanksgiving. The tradition still continues today.

  • Yes I know - this was a quick video made for my daughter's school class, but it seems to be getting "a lot" of views lately. I guess for the educational content. It was really a great experience, and I hope you enjoyed it...even with a few typos!! michelle

  • I have a girlfriend who's dream it is to walk in a cranberry farm such as this. Is this possible? If so, where could I take her?

  • This was a friend of mine who graciously allowed my daughter and myself to experience the harvest on his farm in Delta, BC Canada - first hand! It was amazing. Not really open for public viewing. Most of the few farms here in BC, grow for Ocean Spray. Google the list and have her apply for the position she is interested in.

  • sorry mistahfab1994 - I read your comment wrong. You said "walk" in cranberries - not "work". I guess the same goes....just call a few farms and ask if they would give her the opportunity. How could they say no to someone who had a dream to walk in the cranberries!
