Whilst I really enjoyed reading this book, it really bothered me that none of the characters in it had proper local names. All the author had to do was pick up the phone book to see what the most common local names are. I was hoping to see a Le Page, Falla or a Brehaut, and a bit more genuine local flavour.
I'm really only nitpicking though, as I am a local Guernsey girl and I notice these things :)
I just finished reading this book today and I can't wait to go back to page one and read it all over again. I loved it because it made me laugh and cry and I cared about the characters. The fact that it was written in the form of letters to each other was different but what a nice change from normal chapters.
I was simply awestruck by this womans mastery of words. Mary Ann's novel is pure poetry. This book made me laugh and it made me cry. I did wonder about the ending however, as the tale and characters seemed to take on a different style. With the exception of the very last part of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society it has to be one of the best novels that I have ever read.
Read the book then re-read it again. Lovely funny stories but sadness as well. The way it was written as a series of letters was very clever. Put it forward to my book club and everyone loved it
i must read this book! but why are the names not Guernsey names?? Daiosy? Sidney, Isola haha no self respecting Guern would be named any of these names in 1940's Gsy hehe.......
My husband died a few days ago and in his last illness it was difficult to find the attention and time to spare for many things. But this book--one that I would have enjoyed under any circumstance--was able to engage me even as things went from bad to worse. Sometimes you just need a little refreshment in order to be able to go on and this book, read in snatches did just that. I am saddened to learn that Mary Ann died recently. Thanks Annie Barrows for your part in this most marvellous book.
