Danny Elfman wrote the original score to Spider-Man 2, but parts of his score were rejected by Sam Raimi. Raimi hired Christopher Young to replace some of Elfman's cues, one of them being the train scene. In my opinion, Elfman's original score was far superior to the replacement score provided by Young, but Raimi preferred the Hellraiser-like score by Young.

  • That must suck to go through all that time writing and orchestrating and recording and mixing and mastering, just to have the piece rejected.

  • @nusua definitely. I'm sure that's part of the reason he left the franchise

  • I feel danny definitley did a better job but in my opinion, the action was so well done that the music didn't have much of an impact. Either way, a great scene in every respect. Elfman may highlight more things but Young captures the overall mood quite well I think.

  • @IliveinMA Youngs score creates a mood for the entire sequence. Elfman's score amplifies the tension of each action. Both good, and very different. I prefer Elfman's, though

  • danny elfman makes everything so whimsical, lol.

  • Either Sam Raimi or Christopher Young disliked this.

  • The focus is different, Young's music seem to focus on the train..with Spiderman and Doc Ock happening around it. Elfman on Spidey and his actions, mainly.

  • I think that Christopher Young´s music does a much better job to build tension and emotion. Elfman pretty much repeated cues from SM1, which were not among his greatest works. He was not trying hard. Love the guy, but... that´s my opinion.

  • ELFMAN!!!!

  • @DjDirective actually, the official release of the Spider-Man 2 soundtrack contained only Elfman's music, including the unused/rejected tracks (no tracks of Christopher Young's music.) Young's score was never officially released, the only way to get it is by a bootleg complete score album.

Young actually wrote the score for Spider-Man 3, but a score album was never released for that movie, oddly enough. (additional music by Deborah Lurie and John Debney)
