LANGFORD - A Langford man is warning other cake mix buyers about a scary incident at his home last night. James Carmichael's 15-year old daughter baked a Duncan Hines Spice cake. The family was celebrating James' partner's birthday.
James' daughter was too full to finish her slice and the partner agreed to finish it and bite into a 6 millimetre shard of glass. The glass cut the partner's lip.
When James contacted Duncan Hines the company promised to investigate. James chose instead to give the glass and the remaining cake to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, fearing the corporate probe would take too long and may see other cake buyers injured, including young children.
The parent company of Duncan Hines, Pinnacle Foods, says there are sifting screeners before packaging and employees are not allowed to bring glass on the manufacturing floor. The company added an investigation with Canadian authorities is underway after one consumer filed a complaint.
