Three hour flight on a World War II B-17G Flying Fortress bomber from Scottsdale, Arizona to San Diego, California.
The B-17 was one of the major offensive weapons of WWII with the G model playing the major role in Allied bombardment.
The name "Flying Fortress" was coined by Richard Williams, a reporter for the Seattle Times who gave this name to the Model 299 when it was rolled out showing off its machine gun installations. Boeing was quick to see the value of the title and had it trademarked for use.
The B-17 first saw combat in 1941, when the British Royal Air Force took delivery of several B-17s for high-altitude missions. As World War II intensified, the bombers needed additional armament and armor and each successive model was more heavily armed.
The B-17G (Serial # 44-83575) has been returned to its wartime configuration by the Collings Foundation of Stow, MA and given the name Nine-O-Nine.
The Collings Foundation B-17 was named Nine-O-Nine in honor of a 91st Bomb Group, 323rd Squadron plane of the same name which completed 140 missions without an abort or loss of a crewman.
Great video... could do without the music
