  • I helped put together the "Bix Restored" series and have probably heard "I'm Coming Virginia" 200 times or more, and I still get tears in my eyes at Bix's solo. Thanks for posting this.

  • @Bixfan78 What a great job that must have been! I'm glad you liked it

  • mojoman4147. You're right. "...there is that something special about this song." The person who first introduced me to this had tears in his eyes every time Bix started his solo. I didn't get it. Now, thirty years later...I have tears in my eyes. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, mojoman4147.

  • @runupahill1 that comment made my day, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • "Why, your nice young boy from Davenport, Iowa, why he's not so nice at all ... he's getting all my girls excited." Headmistresses comment to bandmaster that asked if he could allow a young, nice boy from Davenport, Iowa play along with his band at an all-girl's school dance. Says it all about the thrill of hearing Bix's bell.

  • When you look at that photo it's no wonder all the girls were swooning after him, especially with such talent :)

  • From among all of the splendid and irreplaceable records that Bix has provided for us, "I'm Coming Virginia" is my favorite.

There's no way to calculate it, but it seems as if, of all of his recorded work, "Singin the Blues" gets the greatest acclaim from jazz devotees, and I'm strongly appreciative of that masterpiece too.

Further - cannot overlook that Frank Trumbauer had an essential role in these classics.

Thanks for posting "I'm Coming Virginia."

  • I'm also wondering...when a song or "something" is special, there's just something about those old 78's...somehow they were able to capture that "something", maybe something spiritual, much better than any modern recording system seems to do. Does anybody else ever sense this.?

  • Magnificent tune

  • Probably my favorite Bix tune of all time. Seems as though I'm not alone!

  • Its better than the Bobby Hackett version,Louis Armstrong allegedly said "Lotta cats tried to play like Bix, aint non of em succeeded yet".

  • @saxismyaxe that's sortah crazy what does one have to do with the other why can't they both be great why does it have to be either or history says that in fact it was louis that bix heard on the river boat and he to was moved

  • It is soooo beautiful... I love it !!!!!

  • I just got the original Okeh recording (black label) on ebay. I agree with the other comments, this is an extraordinarily beautiful record in every sense. I think my favorite Bix, although I'm also partial to "Goose Pimples" and "Mississippi Mud."

The flip side is another winner, "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans."

"Singing the Blues" is so often rated number one, and it's great for sure, but I personally like these other sides better.

  • @saxismyaxe Louis gets exactly the credit Bix gave him -- the best trumphet player ever. Of course, Louis gave Bix the exact same credit.

  • I'm of the firm opinion that, at the end of the day, Louis gets just a wee bit too much credit, and Bix not enough, within the pantheon of Jazz history.
