168 people killed in a fiery Caspian Airplane crash in northwestern Iran.

The Iranian regime is barred by sanctions from buying American Boeing planes or European Airbus aircraft when they include a significant number of US parts. Caspian Airlines was established in 1992. Its website said it operates more than 50 regular and numerous charter flights each week between Iranian cities and several Middle Eastern and Eastern European destinations. The Islamic republic is home to hundreds of thousands of Armenians and a string of historically important churches of the country's Gregorian rite. Landlocked Armenia has been seeking closer ties with Iran, triggering concern in Washington which called for Yerevan to join international sanctions aimed at persuading Iran to halt sensitive nuclear work (source Yahoo).

With respect to the safety record, TU-154 is slightly SAFER than 727 with only 110 serious incidents compared to 727's 325 serious incidents.

TU-154 = 1,025 airframes

727 = 1,831 airframes

What you have to understand is that it's the MAINTENANCE and CREW TRAINING that are responsible for the majority of air crashes, rarely is it the design of the aircraft. The TU-154 is a SAFE aircraft when maintained well with thorough crew training.
