Nice try but comparing Amanda Palmer with David Bowie? True, Bowie adopted many theatrical stage personnas but what remained constant in his music & what made him great was how he folded himself 'inside-out' & often emerged as pure emotive energy & expression. My original critique of Ms. Palmer's work stands...simply stating that if is she is less aware of herself, she may in turn become & more importantly, her music may become more aware of the world around her & her place in it.

@blimao86 Wow. You should go back in time and tell guys like David Bowie that he was full of shit when he came up with his stage shows.
Better yet, go back and tell Bertolt Brecht that. I'm sure he would have been eternally grateful for your grand judgements on his work. Or Richard Wagner.
Opera, Musical theater, all of it is shallow "self-conscious" nonsense according to a guy on the internet.
-
Artistic 'self-consciousness' precludes a deeper, more poetic, intuitive discovery of oneself. You mentioned "music video" ...Amanda seems to be clearly more interested in her "act" rather than her sound. Her sound would come from within and clearly have nothing to do with her painted eyebrows or her burlesque shtick.
-
@blimao86 - She is those drawn on eyebrows and what you perceive as self-consciousness. Why should she deny that when it is a part of her? Why should she make a *MUSIC VIDEO* with no visual fodder? So you like her more? I think the hang up if yours and has nothing to do with her or her performances.
-
It sounds better when you scroll down and don't watch the video. I always thought she had a compelling voice but was still somehow steeped in gothic iconography and the faux, burlesque treatment of "Dresden Dolls." If she abandoned the drawn eyebrows and the obvious self-consciousness, then maybe she would allow that soaring voice of hers to really get off the ground and take her with it?
I hope Neil Gaiman realizes how fortunate he is.

@WhiteRoseNamine Y'know, by implying that everyone who doesn't like Amanda Palmer is fake and a clone you're no better than the people who you're insulting, right?
Don't get me wrong. I utterly adore Amanda Palmer. I think she's beautiful and an amazing musician. But I also adore Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Audiomachine, David Bowie, Nicky Minaj, and Jack Johnson. Because I like popular musicians am I a clone? Well, no. Not everyone who doesn't like your kind of music is inferior. Don't forget that.
