i agree with you, gold armor isnt that great... but gold tools are actually pretty nice. they mine/kill faster than diamond tools, even if they are inefficient. they also have a bonus to enchanting, so if you get, say, unbreakable five on a gold pickaxe, you have something better than a diamond pickaxe.
