A short introductory theremin lesson in the basics of setting up a theremin. By Thomas Grillo on the Moog Music Etherwave Standard theremin. Playing errors included to demonstrate how difficult it is to play the theremin well.

To get a closer look at the aereal finger technique, right click on the video, select "zoom in" set to desired zoom, and drag the image to where you can see the hand.

This video covers information which was unitentionally left out of Theremin Lesson One.

This video is no substitute for professional how to books, videos, or one-on-one in-person instruction, or workshops with professional thereminists.

This video would not have been possible without the invaluable professional training videos, books, and workshops produced by Peter Pringle, Carolina Eyck, Pamelia Kurstin, and Lydia Kavina. All of their methods have been, and are still being studied by me.

  • Sounds kind of like a violin.

  • @theDman911 Thank you. ;)

  • whatwould happen if you attatched a distortion to it?

  • @coasternut3091 See my video of the JHS Mods Synthdrive pedal. Distortion does some pretty cool stuff to theremin if you want to add an interesting texture to the tone of a theremin.

  • I saw all of your repeat messages. I screen them prior to posting. No need to fear, they all went through.

Right. Anyway, I've played the violin for about 10 years starting at age 7, and flute from about 12 for another 8 years. I've also dabbled with midi. I thought I wanted to play organ until I tried it. Now there's a difficult instrument.

Once you try a theremin, you'll understand what is meant by "the most difficult instrument in the world to play " WELL ". :)

  • I connect this with the Dunlop Wah Wah Cry Baby Pedal... And it gave some interesting effects, you should try it.

You say that it is the most difficult instrument to play well, but how many other instruments do you play? How many have you given the same time and effort to?

  • Indeed. All we can do is keep trying. It takes time.

  • It depends on your sense of intonation. Mine is poor which is why I'm awful at it. But, I keep trying.

  • You're welcome. :)

Which Tchaikowsky song are you trying at only 3 days into the theremin?

  • thanks for the reply. In these days I have been playing a Tchaikovsky song (:
