@sputnik16335 I'm pretty sure you're right. He and Steve McQueen entered several races at a small dirt track in southern California where they raced modified jeeps. One night, we sat next to a woman that my mom struck up a conversation with. Didn't find out until after the races were over, and he came up in the stands, that it was McQueen's wife at the time, Neal.

One of my all time favorite movies. I love the DVD. I skip the drama and go directly to the race sequences :-) The two-disc set has incredible 'extras' about the filming and how they incorporated the actual race footage into the movie. How about a GT40 as a camera car? I think James Garner discovered his racing talent while training for the role.

James Garner actually was a fairly decent race driver, for a short time, not in F1 cars, of course, but in some sports cars and off road. Brian Bedford, who portrayed the Jim Clark-like driver (I think), supposedly was really uncomfortable with driving fast so in the scenes showing the driver in close-up, an actual race driver did those, which explains the full face balaclava always worn by that character. Director John Frankenheimer did a remarkable job, if sometimes overly theatrical.
