does the kiwi have to be a specifc amount of ripeness for this to work?

Hi there! The kiwi should just be ripe (so it should have a little give when you squeeze it). Once it's ripe, it's perfect for eating and also will peel smoothly with this method. If you squeeze it and note that it's still quite firm, that's a sign that it's not yet ready to eat so you should wait a day or two. If it's REALLY mushy, it might be too ripe, but should still peel easily this way (just might not taste good).

i just tried it, it worked, but i did it somewhat wrong (there was still some left in the kiwi), i think next time i'll get it perfect tho, i guess i have to keep my hand on the outside of it when moving the spoon inside

Oh my pleasure! Yeah I've learned that it helps to keep the hand on the outside just to guide the spoon along and to just slip it in as close to the skin as possible. You'll probably get it the next time!

This reminds me of that episode of Oz where the larger prison inmate informs the smaller one (who is now his property) that "Now we are going to spoon".

While they didn't show what happened next I'm pretty sure what she just did to that Kiwi is the similar to what happened on Oz.
