@TokyoSpike Ashton was born to wear the fullest, widest hoop skirts from the South. The actress' that played her was a great fit to the character described in Jakes' novels. Nothing says "friviously cotton plantation princess" than a billowing dress of taffeta and flounces of ruffles! I hardly think you'd find her doing outside chores or worse- picking cotton in that dress or any other for that matter given her status as a southern belle.
