Part 2: Going Global.

By the late 1970s, the Sicilian mafia was smuggling millions of dollars worth of heroin into the US every year.

They had a unique method of distribution via Sicilian-owned pizzerias across the United States.

The racket became known as the Pizza Connection. The vast profits to be made from heroin led to savage violence as competing mafia dons and families sought a bigger piece of the pie. In the US, it led to the assassination of a greedy godfather in broad daylight. In Sicily, a murderous clan known as the Corleonesi - from the town of Corleone, which gave its name to Marlon Brando's character in 'The Godfather' - blasted their way to the top of the mafia.

Ultimately, a battle would rage on the streets of the US between a new breed of ruthless mafioso and a new kind of policeman, prepared to risk everything to infiltrate the mafia. With the help of FBI agents like Joe Pistone (aka Donnie Brasco) and Carmine Russo the Mafia's drug enterprise would be exposed and eventually dismantled.

My Grandfather once worked with the Mafia. Now all the people he worked with are either dead or behind bars and he's a fat guy living in a trailer. That's where the Mafia got him.

Sicillian and US Mafia have some incredible stories to tell, but to be honest it's all about the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta now. They put everybody else to shame...

now (and since the late 70s) a snich can move to arkansas and change his name to jim baker even get plastic surgery to change physical appearance and its all paid for by our tax dollars.....so it looks like the u.s american gov't is the most powerful criminal empire or mafia in the world....

@CameronScheibReal Theres no such thing as a Most powerfull Mafia in the world, some Mafia groups are better at different things than others. In American now it's not just Italians it's also Albanians, Triads, Russians everybody. In Italy the Mafia groups there will always dominate because their in the homeland. Whatever Mafia in their home country will always be the most powerfull in the home country, America is a mix up of all.
