Here's my guess of how metal got started (notice how I said guess?): I think ssince tony Iommi got his finger chopped in a METAL factory, and since Black SAbbath was the first METAL band, I think that's where it came from..... but I have no idea, AWESOME SONG!!!! One of my faves, and seriously, who cares if it's overplayed? It's the players fault...

The term " Heavy-Metal " was started by Steppenwolf in their song ' Born to be Wild " (1968) .... Heavy-Metal-Thunder..!! Hence: the phrase... PEACE & GOD-BLESS....Dan

The death and destruction of War Pigs. N.I.B., the love song for Lucifer. Nobody ever wrote songs like these before, or at least not in the mainstream. When you think of metal, these are the things you think of. Instrumentally, Sabbath were not too different than other bands, just a bit darker. It's the lyrics that set them apart.

there was bands at the 50's using disortion. and I think the term "heavy metal" was started by the media.

I wrote an essay about metal for university, and the general consensus is that the Kinks invented distortion by poking a pencil through the speaker of their guitar amps, and Steppenwolf was the first to use the term "heavy metal", but yeah I''d say the first full blown metal band was Sabbath

I don't think there were any metal bands before Sabbath. Far as I know, the first of the first... unless maybe Zeppelin and Deep Purple count too; they were around doing heavy blues rock at the same time- But... all that slightly macabre and slightly satanic stuff... big crucifixes etc... I think that was all Sabbath's thing and it nails the genre
