@dec2 The Rome I refer to existed between the time of Hannibal all the way until about Marcus Aurelius. The Rome that existed during then supported literature, advancements in technology and engineering, and studied greek philosophy. The Rome after was (and I don't mean to antagonize Christians) became a different body. It lost interest in many aspects of Roman and Greek tradition as it became a largely Christian Empire. Like you said, it was the Holy Roman Church that burned the books.

@NinjXPk isn't it possible that it's the other way around? Many examples, but an obvious one is when Justinian I closed down all the philosophical schools around 500AD... and when the holy roman church burned so many books... isn't philosophy and knowledge the precursor to applied knowledge (technology)?

It depends on what you are referring to. If you are talking about running water, sewer systems, baths, roads, ect. Then yes, western Europe was set back significantly after the fall of Rome. But not all things technological were set back. For example weapons and seafaring technologies improved greatly during the dark ages. The adaptation of the barbarian way of governing: feudalism was by no means a scientific progression but it ended the slave economy which forced us to adapt other technologies
