That particular dispute - one of dozens perpetrated by police & security guards around that time, at the behest of bar owners who employed these guards and off-duty flat foots and were soon to be backed by new oppresive powers, about-to-be-implemented, given to Westport bar owners by city hall - arose when a rogue security cop accused me of a vehicle-related infraction after I had returned to a patient audience, who'd waited as I fetched gas for my generator. As was the case in all prior similar instances, several associates of mine & I assumed that the guard may have just considered my car in a zone temporarily off limits, though the barrier closest to where we parked had already been moved out of the way for the night and the time when the barriers were scheduled to be applied had passed, although some other barriers were late being brought down elsewhere in the area. Since the barrier we were dealing with was on time at coming down, & since we were bringing back a heavy power source, needed to park close as well as hurry back to the equipment, for security reasons, we naturally didn't question whether other barriers late to come down were still in place, we were just glad that one was already down & thus returned to the corner where I'd already been performing. But, as was the usual ritual, in response to the security guard's statement, we offered to then move the car, which had always previously satisfied security, even though at that time we technically shouldn't have had to. The difference was that this security guard, along with another individual employed by the bars, saw this opportunity to make a big deal out a contrived bone of contention, knowing if they convinced me to get pulled aside for a time consuming conference, it would cause me to lose the good crowd, curtail earnings, & therefore impress the bar owners, who resented my independence from them. The subject rent-a-cop, went away momentarily after we told him that moving the car was going to have to suffice, as it had before. A short time later, after I'd plugged back in and resumed playing, this guard, whose only actual duties are guarding property in the district, bolted from behind me into the middle of my set-up mid-song to the crowd, & slapped one cuff on a wrist. This guard had grown bolder each week about rudeness to me, my associates & crowd members, as he bucked for brownie points with his bar owning employers, bent on ending popular street acts. Still, I knew he was attempting to exceed his authority, and wouldn't allow him to put the other cuff on. I then invited intervention by nearby uniformed K.C.P.D. officers. When these officers, who, it turns out, were also working off-duty for the bar owners arrived from across the street, the matter was discussed & nearly resolved. However, when I merely pointed out that, since the security guard had tipped over my guitar by his bolting in without warning & knocking it over, that said guard should pay for any damage the guitar may have received. Upon hearing this, the K.C.P.D. officer in charge suddenly flew into a rage and - before the entire crowd (of 50 or more still looking on), with assistance from the guard & other officers, proceeded to cuff me, hands behind my back - so I couldn't break my fall, then picked me up chest high and slammed me head-first into the sidewalk, before placing me in jail, lacerated head & all.
