Tolkien, along with Howward, was the father of the modern formula of fantasy. ofc There were similar epic stories, but none that popularised, especially today. These stories fallow the example of LotR, not the earlier ones.
That, and the cinematographic formula of LotR trilogy.

After 100th incarnation of LotR it doesn't look all that epic... Let's hope there will be some content to make up for that.
