A reaction to the Sarah Churman and other videos of its ilk, which purport to show Deaf people now "hearing". However, these videos NEVER discuss WHAT the Deaf person can hear and DO with their new found "hearing". In this vlog, I explain what it is like for a Deaf person to use a hearing aid or cochlear implant.

  • I've been watching many deaf or hard of hearing individuals on youtube explain their negativity towards CIs, without fully understanding why. So, I just wanted to thank you for sharing and explaining your opinion so clearly for me. I feel that you've cleared up quite a few fuzzy spots in my opinion on CIs. The one thing I don't like hearing about CIs is how so many hearing individuals assume normalization, thinking that "hearing" will make the deaf "normal", "happier" or "better".

  • @Berco You're welcome! ;-)

  • I know that Deafhood is cultural/linguistic more than a physical disability. But the "mainstream" culture still lumps us together. And that script, about the poor, lonely, deaf person who is happy and excited to hear *something* is often the same script used for stories of those who can't walk or can't see.

There's a term for this coming into use in the Disability Rights movement: Pity Porn -- and they give me the same feeling of squick.

  • @CapriUni "Pity Porn".... I LIKE it!

  • Very funny...you really think that CI isn't the answer but you never wore one, eh.

  • @dominicerrigo Once again, Russell, you miss the point. Are YOU understanding everything you hear with your CI without lipreading? And do you think you hear like a HEARING person? Think again.

  • Also, thank you for putting up captions. My ASL reading is still very basic (but I'm learning!), so I appreciate it. :)

  • Why don't you participate Hands and Voices organization and meet kids....if so, then you wouldn't bring this topic after all.

  • @DrDonGCSUS

It's been 8 months and yes, I'm picking up without lipreading about 30% and improving. At this rate, in two to 4 years, I will not need to lipread.

My son, Dominic, goes to a school and he's the only deaf student socializing with his peers and teachers. I didn't mention on previous sentence...he doesn't need interpreters or subtitles on TV.

  • Hey, Dr. G Please bring that CD or DVD you play to your students. This is for the hearing in Idaho on Oct. 28
