The way Steve explained this song in concert was that he was on parole after he got out of jail and couldn't drive and had no money, so he wrote his wife this song.

Had not heard this but would enjoy seeing him live. It might be hard to tell which of his seven wives he sang it for. Thus, perhaps this is how he learned to sing, "My Old Friend the Blues."
