In every performance of "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," audience members are chosen to "compete" in the show. This means that every night, you never know just who you might see on the stage.
To help make this point, we enlisted the help of familiar faces from all over Eastern Iowa. Among the people you'll spot in this video are Steve Ginsberg of Ginsberg Jewelers; KCRG-TV9's Bruce Aune, Beth Malicki and Joe Winters; Scott Schulte and Ric Swann of Z102.9's Schulte & Swann Morning Show; CVB president Marilee Fowler; Tim Boyle and Amy Johnson Boyle; Doug Neumann, Mallory Mohwinkle, Quinn Pettifer, Vanessa Solesbee and Jill Wilkins of the Cedar Rapids Downtown District; former Cedar Rapids Mayor Kay Halloran; local arts advocate Joe Jennison; ICCA's Abby Bellain; Orchestra Iowa director Tim Hankewich; former (and possibly future) Iowa gubernatorial candidate Christian Fong; and more. We were incredibly lucky to get them all -- and more importantly, they had a great sense of humor and made the video hilarious! (Please note that the individuals listed above are NOT members of the actual "Spelling Bee" cast, though some "Spelling Bee" cast members ARE present in the video, chief among them Mike Wilhelm, who plays Vice Principal Douglas Panch and gives out the words.)
Special thanks to all our gust spellers; the "Spelling Bee" cast; Jason Spina, who helped run cameras and microphones; and Nick Hayes, who lent one of the extra cameras needed. Video conceived and edited by Rob Merritt for Theatre Cedar Rapids.
"25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" runs Sept. 10-0ct. 2 at Theatre Cedar Rapids. For tickets and information, visit www,theatrecr.org.
