VBS NEWS HOST SUROOSH ALVI DISCUSSES THE EFFECT OF THE WEST BANK WALL ON PALESTINIAN TRAVEL

VBS: How does the wall interfere with life inside its perimeter?

Suroosh Alvi: Basically what's happening is the Israeli government is controlling the movement of the Palestinians. They're not allowed into Israel and their movement is even restricted within the West Bank. You never know what roads you're going to have to take to get from point A to point B because they're always moving things around, putting up blockades so you have to go onto these rural routes strewn with rubble.

And this is all done without any sort of advanced warning?

Yes. We were trying to drive from Emad's house to Bethlehem and it took us hours to get there. You'd be going along then all of a sudden there'd be a roadblock and you'd have to turn left, then you'd hit another one and have to turn right and go around right by where you originally were. It's extremely confusing—the whole time we were driving, we kept having to pull over and get new directions from other Palestinians.

Having blockades at the border at least makes sense—why do they need to close off roads within Palestinian territory?

Because there are so many Israeli settlements everywhere and they have to have highways running straight from the settlements to Israel proper for the settlers to get back and forth. And so now Palestinians are forbidden from going on these beautiful, nice highways that are going straight through the West Bank—it's totally fucked.

A FINAL Q&A WITH HOST SUROOSH ALVI ON BIL'IN'S FRIDAY NIGHT DEMI-RIOT AND ITS IMPLICATIONS ON THE WHOLE MIDDLE EASTERN SHEBANG

So, these weekly showdowns between the villagers and soldiers all stem from the way the wall deviates from the border and encroaches on Palestinian territory.

Yes. In the case of Bil'in, they lose 55 percent of their land. And it's all their good land, all their farmable land. Overnight all the town's farmers lose their livelihoods. At the same time the Israeli settlement goes up and they have access to that land.

Do you think that's the underlying motivation for the settlements and the route the wall takes?

No. If you look at the West Bank, it's a big pile of rubble. You see a big settlement in the middle of nowhere and you go, "Why would they put that settlement there? The land is shit." We drove all around Israel proper and it's full of beautiful green pastures. There's plenty of space for these settlers, but they're choosing to live in the West Bank and if there's a good plot of land they can farm, then the government figures out a way to give it to them.

In Bil'in's case, their good land was lost. Then they fought to gain access to some of it and the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that the government had to move the wall back there, but they never did and now they've announced that they're going to build a new settlement there as well. So who the fuck knows.

Considering that from a security standpoint the wall's been 100 percent effective, do you think there's any chance of Israel stopping construction on the thing?

The way it's going, just being there I got this impending feeling of doom about the whole thing. This whole place is gearing up toward having a really big war. I don't see the wall coming down anytime soon. International pressure hasn't done anything about it—it just keeps getting built. They had the Annapolis conference last week and they're saying, oh, we're going to work toward a two-state solution. And maybe that will eventually happen, but I think the wall will probably stay. The short answer is I really have no fucking clue. All I know is that wall's an incredibly poor leading indicator of things to come.
