Anthony Moody exploded for a season-high 30 points and the University of Mary blasted Bemidji State University 78-56. The U-Mary defense shut down a BSU attack that posted over 90 points the night before and lifted the Marauders to a weekend sweep of a Northern Sun men's basketball doubleheader weekend.
Impossible to stop, Moody nailed five treys in seven attempts and hit 12-of-19 shots overall. The All-NSIC performer also led the Marauders (7-3 overall, 3-3 NSIC) with six rebounds and four assists. Moody set the tone in the first half when he scored 20 points and knocked down 4-of-5 shots behind the arc.
Tied at 19-19 in the opening stanza, U-Mary went on an 11-0 run that included points from four different players, including four points from Moody. The Marauders closed the first half on an 11-2 run, capped by a Baley Johnson trey off a feed from Moody, and went into intermission up 41-23.
Bemidji State (5-5, 2-4) opened the second half on a 10-2 run but a layup by Johnson and two baskets by Eric Erdmann staunched the bleeding by the Marauders. The Beavers would cut the lead down to 12 but eventually the Marauders would grow their advantage to 24 points.
The Marauders shot 59.3 per cent from the field while holding the Beavers to a 39.1 per cent effort from the field. U-Mary's shooting helped the Marauders overcome a huge free throw disadvantage. BSU was 16-of-25 at the line while U-Mary was 4-of-5.
Jordan Wilhelm scored 14 points for U-Mary, the only other Marauders player in double figures. Cameron Lee added eight points and Erdmann had seven. Off the bench, Johnson made both his three point attempts and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field to score eight points.
Bryce Tesdahl, James Ellisor and Pat Cassidy all had 11 points for BSU and Mason Walters added 10.
The win over Bemidji State was a second straight defensive gem by the Marauders after U-Mary allowed just 54 points to the University of Minnesota Duluth the night before.
The Marauders now go on a short hiatus and return to action January 1, 2011, at Winona State University.
