Great Little Trains of Wales - the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway.

This 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge steam railway provides a tourist service for all the family.

Built as a Light Railway to avoid some of the costs of railway construction, the narrow gauge allows for tight curves and steep gradients, enabling the line to follow the contours of the countryside.

All trains are steam hauled, either by one of their unique original locomotives or one from abroad.

The carriages too are special; those in regular use being from Hungary and Austria with access to the enclosed seating area via an open balcony from where some of this video was shot.

It's a great way to watch the world go by! These pictures are from July 2009.

Like most of these preserved railways, it is run almost entirely by volunteers - a hearty band of enthusiasts, without whom, this and many railways like it, would not exist for our pleasure and education.

This is No. 1 in the "Great Little Trains of Wales" series. Please do comment if you wish.

  • @CNW4145 Thanks for your kind comments.

  • You forgot to mention it is mostly run by volunteers...

  • @Eddy2730 I was meant to say one OF my favourites. Sorry!

  • Thanks for uploading this! The WLLR is one od my favourite preserved lines in Britain.

  • Good railway but I can't take 4 pictures at once - all moving rapidly. May be it's what they do on TV but I don't have to like it. Sorry, I'm sure loads of people do like it . .

  • The extra six inches makes all the difference!

  • Thanks! Good railway to start with.
