Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, music and dance. It is a synthesis of African traditions, customs and philosophies synthesized in and influenced by a Brazilian atmosphere. It is a meditation form, a dance, a fight and a form of entertainment, a way to pass the time. In the African tradition, it contains elements from all facets of life - it incorporates music, movement, spirituality, mysticism, magic, practicality and analysis. Capoeira does not focus on injuring the opponent. Rather, it emphasizes skill. It empowers people in many ways.It was created in Brazil by slaves brought by the Portuguese from all over sub-saharan Africa(from the Congo,Angola,Namibia and perhaps even South Africa and Mozambique - all from the common heritage - Bantu), sometime after the sixteenth century. Capoeira is a direct descendant of African fighting styles, and was incorporated with Brazilian dance form distilled from African slaves in Brazil which is in essence from various African and Brazilian influences. For some time, Capoeira was criminalized and prohibited in Brazil. In 1890, Brazilian president Deodoro da Fonseca signed an act that prohibited the practice of capoeira nationwide, with severe punishment for those caught. In spite of the ban, Manuel dos Reis Machado (Maestre Bimba) was finally successful in convincing the authorities of the cultural value of capoeira, thus ending the official ban in the 1930s.He founded the first capoeira school in 1932, the Academia-escola de Capoeira Regional at the Engenho de Brotas in Salvador-Bahia.In the mid-1970s masters of the art form began to emigrate and teach capoeira in the United States and other countries.Today there are many capoeira schools all over the world, and it has attracted a broad spectrum of multicultural, multiracial students.Forms of Capoeira are C.Angola,C.Regional,C.Contemporâna.Participants form a roda, or circle, and take turns either playing musical instruments (such as the Berimbau), singing, or ritually sparring in pairs in the center of the circle. The sparring is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, takedowns, and with extensive use of leg sweeps, kicks, and headbutts.Music is integral to capoeira. It sets the tempo and style of game that is to be played within the roda. The music is composed of instruments and song(Ladainha,Quadras,Corridos).Capoeiristas change their playing style significantly as the songs or rhythm from the berimbau commands. In this manner, it is truly the music that drives capoeira.Other instruments in the bateria are: two pandeiros (tambourines), a reco-reco (rasp),an agogô (double gong bell),an atabaque (conga-like drum).Capoeira does not focus on injuring the opponent. Capoeiristas often prefer to show the movement without completing it, enforcing their superiority in the roda. If an opponent cannot dodge a slow attack, there is no reason to use a faster one. Capoeira regional groups periodically hold Batizados ("baptisms" into the art of capoeira). Members being "baptized" are normally given a corda (cord belt) and an apelido (capoeira nickname)The Art of Capoeira is a part of the popular culture and has been featured in numerous films:"Dança de Guerra"("Dance of War") , directed by Jair Moura (1968) , "Only The Strong" (1993), Besouro(2009) directed by João Daniel Tikhomiroff,TV shows,Music Videos,Dance(Breakdancing),Video games(Tekken,Capoeira Legends: Path to Freedom ) from Wikipeda
