*SELENA'S POV*

"Finished," Demi declared triumphantly, placing her pen on top of the long paragraph we had to correct in English.

"I have something to read to you guys."

I looked up at Mrs. Rivers standing at the front of the classroom and held back a groan. As soon as Demi and I had time to talk, she interrupted.

C'mon, Sel. Just a little bit longer and school's over and you're free from this Monday.

Mrs. Rivers pulled out a paper from her folder and Demi returned to her seat. Our teacher cleared her throat and began to read.

"I was drawn in by her vivacity
But now I have come to realize
It is a symptom of her wheedling heart.
Though infallible in close contact,
Her love is mutable from a distance."

I glanced around the room. Why was Mrs. Rivers reading us this? The vocabulary alone was flying over most of our heads.

"This gypsy girl of such ambivalent affections
Stole my soul, reason and very being
And so carelessly intertwined them
With her own
Until now my thoughts are Xeroxes of hers,
Heartbeats dittos of hers, emotions echoes
Of hers."

My eyes landed on Demi, who was slouched down in her seat, arms crossed and cheeks rosy, beautiful as always. I smiled.

"The 'I love you's were immediate paroxysms
And never once have I ever begun
To think they were spurred
By a merely fleeting scintilla but
The revelation of her abrupt caprice
Has made me halt, stone from the Medusa of betrayal."

I stopped focusing on the words I didn't know, and let the meaning and emotion flow over me. It was beautiful... and heartbreaking. I looked again at the flushed Demi, who had by now steadily and curiously turned a bright red.

"Perhaps it is my fault, perhaps I accidentally
Acquiesced this torture
When I first saw her wandering eye
And met it with silence
As is my taciturn nature."

Realization gnawed a growing pit in my heart and my chest felt like it would erupt as I watched Demi squirm in her seat.

This was her poem.

Her devastating love poem to me.

"But how was I to know my lovely's love was
Volatile in both senses of the word?
I must have been damned to this doomed love."

What the hell did volatile mean? She felt damned? Our love was doomed?

My head whip lashed to Demi from Mrs. Rivers and I saw her panicky eyes locked on her desk.

"Now he on her arm
Has fallen into her trap.
It is now he who believes
Her affection not to be ephemeral
Despite being aware of her vagary to him."

He? Joe? My trap? This couldn't be how she felt.

"However, I lie in wait where she kicked me-"

Kicked her?

"-Watching for the unavoidable repeal of her
Devotion and I, contra to all my acumen,
Will collapse into her arms again
Until her next amorous yen."

Mrs. Rivers tucked the paper back into her folder and slowly closed it.

"That, ladies and gentlemen, was a poem written by one of your classmates here. You may go."
_______________________________________________________________
Okay. I wrote the poem in this and I'm pretty proud of it- it's the first poem (i've only attempted a few) I've written that wasn't too teenage girl-y. I actually based it on this story, THEN decided to put it in here. (I kind of felt awkward putting it in as something adored by the teacher but.... you know) What do you think? I could post another video explaining it if it would help.
And I know this poem is kind of out of the blue, but in my head, Demi's always writing and there was no reason to call it out until now. Still, I went back and added some foreshadowing and clues to the earlier chapters to help with the continuity.
