22 years ago, when I was fourteen, I was struck by a car while riding my bicycle. As a result of the accident, I injured my spinal cord causing quadriplegia. Due to the traumatic brain injury, I was put into a coma for three and a half weeks. I spent the first eight years after the accident in institutions and after tirelessly working and advocating to return to my hometown and live in my own apartment with 24 hour assistance, I was able to do just that. For the first ten years, I was provided proper funding to have the round the clock assistance I needed, but the stateof North Carolina cut funding four years ago leaving me with only sixteen hours coverage, Over the last four years, I have relied heavily on family and friends to assist me overnight, which has heavily affected thier own personal lives. With my safety, heath, and well being in mind, this is my plea to get the attention needed for funding so that I may continue to live an independant life in my apartment.
If there is anyone interested in helping me to continue to live an independent life, please contact Kay Zwan at The Disability Resource Center at 910-815-6618
