  • These are videos shot by Will Blozan, President of the Eastern Native Tree Society atop dead hemlock trees in Great Smokey Mountains National Park in the summer of 2007. These trees have been killed by the foreign invasive insect - the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid. The videos were taken as part of an investigation to document the biggest of the eastern hemlock trees before they are lost forever. 11 of the 15 largest trees document are already dead.

  • The death of the Hemlock is a manmade natural disaster of such a massive scale. It is one of the most depressing events of my lifetime. How will the forests and animals adjust? First the Chestnut, now the Hemlock--our greed for money and power will be our end.

  • How perfectly depressing this is. I live in the Cumberland Mts near the eastern boundary of the Plateau in northern TN, and these are prominent along streams. The trees around here are still intact, but I fear what I've just watched is a preview of things to come here.
