Watch an interview with John Y.K. Lee, MD, a neurosurgeon at Penn Medicine.
"I knew neurosurgery was right when I --the first time I saw the brain completely exposed. The brain was beating. And we had rushed this patient to the operating room to evacuate a clot after a car accident. And I just thought to myself, what an honor and what a privilege to be able to operate on someone's brain and to save their life."
"I see two types of patients. The first type are patients with brain tumors. The second type of patient that I see are patients with trigeminal neuralgia or other cranial nerve disorders. Physicians refer patients to me with different disorders and brain tumors because I offer a range of options starting from conventional open brain surgery to minimally invasive endoscopic techniques, to Gamma Knife outpatient radiation options."
"One of the great things about working at a large center like Penn is that I have access to excellent surgeons and excellent collaborators in the radiation field, and excellent oncologists who are always thinking both outside the box as well as about the patient. I work with the patient to lead them to the right decision for them."
"My name is John Lee, I'm the Medical Director of the Penn Gamma Knife at Pennsylvania Hospital. I'm a neurosurgeon at Penn Medicine."
