you need a positive rate of climb before you retract the landing gear.. or this happens.

No he does not. He could eject if he wanted (ejection seats are 0-0) ,i think he knew he had enough runway to safely stop + he could cut fuel off and shut the engines ,and that prevented the whole airplane going to flame ,and saved couple of hours of hard labor for firefighters.....
