So, the word "retarded" in a derogatory sense is not referring to your daughter, but rather her condition. There's no reason for you or her to be offended by it then.

I am by no means politically correct, but I am a literary person and words extract more emotion out of me than normal people. Having said that, the word "retard" (and other so-called controversial words) conjures imagery in my head that makes me cringe when I hear it.

It's true that "retarded" is a real word. There are instances where it is okay to use the word. But when using the word to put someone down or to joke around or whatnot, I feel that it is unacceptable.

P.S. I am not whiny.

I'm probably not the first person to say this, but very literally it's ok to use that word in those conditions. If someone is being foolish or dumb, they are literally demonstrating that their thoughts are retarded. Open a dictionary. The meaning of retard, emphasis on the a btw, is to slow down or hold back. If someone dont grasp an idea, they are mentally retarded in that one instance, and example. If it hurts ones feelings, It is because they are implying an emotional aspect that isn't there.

This won't become a "widely talked about topic" because you're basically asking people to curb their speech. You are offended by a word whose actual meaning has little to do with your connotation. When people say "you're retarded," they generally mean "you've done something someone with diminished mental capacity might do." Well, that's clearly not as succinct, and no more apt. Might as well go with the former. Next you'll tell us we can't say "niggardly" because black people will get upset.

I'll say whatever I want whenever I want. I'm not an insensitive jerk but nobody is going to tell me what I can and can not say. Obviously i'm not going to go up to a retard and call him/her a retard. I'm white and have called Black people the N word, not in a serious manner and they get that. I have no problem in them calling me whatever they want because i'm not an over-sensitive asshole. If someone doesn't know your story and blurts out "retard, gay, fag, homo", just get over it!

I agree. It is a touchy word, if someone is doing something idiotic, don't call it "retarded" call it stupid or just idiotic. I know people let it slip sometimes, and old habits die hard, but just try and watch y'alls tongues around people. You never know how they feel about the word.

The thing about the word "retard", and with a lot of English words, is that the definition doesn't always stay the same. For example, "cool" used to refer chilly, or cold, but now means neat or interesting. It's not the word, but the context. Yes, there are bad connotations of the word "retard", and I can see why you're bothered by it, but if they aren't directly calling your daughter that, you should have no reason to get offended. Also, there is a difference between nigger and nigga.
