It's not the pet shops that are adding to the problem, it's irresponsible and careless owners who abandon pets. Can you honestly expect a pet shop to stop selling pets? If you want to adopt a pet from a shelter that's older, more power to you. that's commendable and charitable, but every pet deserves a home regardless of origins.

How can you be so sure that a pet shop knows its heritage? This pet shop is certainly a rarity. MOST pet shops get their dogs from puppy mills, and they may not even know it. Puppies from breeders can cost a thousand (or more) dollars, and puppies from puppy mills are usually cheaper because they "produce in mass quantity". You just don't actually know your heritage unless if you go to a certified, licensed, and professional breeder.

heres the thing.not everyone wants a middle aged mongrel or puppy with an unknown heritage

Never said they didn't. But, keep in mind, when you buy a cat or dog from a pet shop, you're supporting bringing more into the world, which takes homes away from animals waiting for them already. We need to shut down puppy and kitten mills.

I'd also like to point out that a responsible pet shop doesn't sell cats or dogs, but works with the local animal shelter and places them in the store, which helps find homes. Our animal shelter does this. While they sell small animals, fish, reptiles etc, they do not support puppy and kitten mills, which is where the majority of cats or dogs found in pet shops come from. Instead, they help save a life instead of supporting bringing more into the world. :) Sounds like a good idea to me! ^_^
Glad it was okay!!
But personally if you want to adopt a puppy, don't adopt from a pet store. Check your local shelter or rescue group... :(

The difference with shelters and pet stores is that we have guarantees on our puppies, that they are healthy, not aggressive, and are completely fit for sale. They also have papers. It's also very hard to find puppies in shelters, that are not pit bulls. (I love pits btw.) I hate when people say not to buy from a pet store. Do you want the puppies from pet stores to never have a home.

Also many people think that all pet stores that sell puppies get the pups from puppy mills. That's FALSE. Our store buys from breeders that only have a few dogs, not puppy mills. They are healthy and we take them out and play with them everyday. We even take a few home on holidays to be with a family. And if by chance we do have a sick puppy, we take it home and take care of it. We have even kept a few that we took home to take care of. Our store is very different from most puppy stores.
