  • Will somebody please explain to me what is the difference between Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox without the "full communion with the Pope" stuff. I am confused.

  • @TheRougeHawksClan Thats how we do it in the eastern church!

  • As I understand it, only married priests who convert from the Orthodox to the Catholic church can remain married. As far as I understand it, the Catholic church will not ordain married Byzantine men as Priests. This also holds true for the Western Rites. Former Episopal ministers who are married can become Western Rite Preists with Rome's approval. Pope JPII started the program in the late 80's or early 90's.

  • Eastern Priests can get married in the U.S. too. That has changed from what I said before. I talked to the Vocation Director and he told me it was possible for married men to get ordained. I believe it has to be approved by Rome, however. I assume that if the bishop approves it, it would then be approved by Rome.

  • @oakking1 only if they are married before they become priests, and only those who are ordained in Europe can do so, but must remain celibate if their wife dies before they do. All monks and Bishops are celibate...Bishops tend to be either former Monks or Widowers.

  • Are Eastern Catholic Priests allowed to get married? Or are they celibate like the Roman Rite?

  • @nuduaspiaggia I knew a priest in college who was bi-ritual and had permission to do the Roman Rite and the Byzantine Rite. I was an acolyte for the Byzantine Liturgy. It was very moving.

  • @StealthGoblin1 The Exarchic Greek Abbey of Grottaferrata in Italy is of the Byzantine rite. It was established in 1050 and never left communion with Rome and never lost the Byzantine rite.
