Who really killed Abdinasir Dirie? A heart-rending story from inside Canada's Somali community.

In the 1990s, Abdinasir Dirie's parents fled civil war in Somalia for the apparent peace and safety of Canada. Years later, G Baby, as his family called him, made his own way from the rough streets of Toronto's Jamestown Cres. (Doomstown) neighbourhood to the oilfields of Alberta looking for riches and good fortune. There, he died and his murder remains unsolved, like so many other murders of young Somali-Canadians. The extra twist in this case: some members of his family are convinced they know who committed the crime.

Hear from the family of Abdinasir Dirie as the fifth estate explores the searing pain of their struggle and peels back the layers of a story even more complicated than anyone originally expected.

  • PEOPLE DONT GET SHOOT FOR NO REASON... HE WAS IN TO DOPE..THAY CALL IT FORT CRACK FOR A REASON .. WHATEVER NO BIG DEAL..SEEMS LIKE THAT WHOLE FAMILY IS RETARED AND STUPIED

  • I dont blame Abdinasir parents because trully they have tried but come on they live in western culture where parents have less control and no power over their kids. I just want parents to stop making excuses, smell the coffee and tackle before it is too late. My mum watched this and i am glad she did because this way she is able to nag my brother before he gets into whatever he is in deeply. The problem is boys dont talk about their issues. My bro talks to me, somehow he loves telling things

  • I agree with the community guys because time and time parents like to make excuses for their kids. Yea your kid is a good boy but he leads double life. My own brother the last year changed so much lost so much weight and is always eager for money, his school work went out the door. My mum can see he is not in good lifestyle however does not really acknowledge. Is time the parents realised to stop making excuses and put their food down. I hope my brother changes, trust me i nag talk to him.

  • practise ur deen parents and be examples for your kids. there's no point adopting western values.

  • this generation is only a reflection of the one before.... we are the product of war hungry mongrols who destroyed their land and stolen the future that should have been for their kids...

then we have neglegent fathers and mothers who cant accept the truth. we are a reflection of our parents... and so many somali's have failed their children...

  • due to all respect. i feel disgusted!

i swaer our generation of children have chnaged! somail's have changed! this is the parent fault that they havent taught the kids whats right and wrong! the kid himself was involved on somethign which led him to be dead.. something happend for sure.. but we cant do anything.. police arent doing anything.. this is injustice! injustice to somali's and all other muslim and i agree with hodo.. that we generation are dead... sa sad wallahi.. May Allah guide us!

  • This is a lesson for all the somali parents

  • My heart goes out to the familys, who lost their love once..u can se the confustion of the parnts , they dont knwo what is going on, the world is geting crazy kids are faced with drugs and gangsterz..they wana fit in is easy money,,,but theirs also dangr in it...

  • great documentary. i grew up in jane and wilson, north west toronto. not too far from dixon. i use to worry about the somali situation in toronto, but now i could care less. i dont care if those two girls rot in a jamaican jail. i dont care if that kid dies. i dont care if 200 of them die. its their choice.... losers.
