Imagine a bunch of little lights (maybe 20 or 40 of them), on a table, each about the size of a chess piece. Each is independent of the other. You arrange them around on the table any way you want. Each one continually slowly changes colors on its own. When you wave your hand over them, it creates waves of colors that follow your hand.
This project was hacked from my Trippy RGB Light, which was hacked from the MiniPOV3 kit by Ladyada.
I created this project as artist in residence at AS220.

I made a kit for these, which should be available at the MAKE Magazine store:

Cool idea. Yeah, I think it would work. The frosted glass would reduce the range of the detection of your hand, but I don't think that would be a problem.

Yeah, cool idea -- or in a floor, or a dance surface.
Now I want to make several hundred of these...

I think we need to scale back on use of the word "trippy"
these are "neat" they are "cute" en masse they might be "interesting"
but reminiscent of that time ! spent 12 hours sweating and gurning and worked out the meaning of life (which later I could frustratingly not remember) they are not....

Nice work :-) I've attached a video response of a similar project I did with interactive RGB leds put in Milk Bottles. I think you might like it.

Hey, I checked out the website and saw the schematic you posted, but Im wondering if you can upload a detailed instruction manual and parts list. That would be great.
Thanks

Have any idea whether the IR components would work behind frosted glass so that you could give it a more dulled out, trippy look and hide the electrical components?
