This is my new hamster set-up, though I have yet to get any hamsters. The new job has been kind of exhausting, but this weekend I've managed to find the strength to set it all up again. The plan is to get a pair of hamsters from my local SPCA, sometime in the future, but I don't know when that will be, yet. Feel free to let me know what you think of the new set-up! Included is the piece I got through Ebay; The Rooftop Garden. It gives the hamster the choice to go and get some fresh air! It's a rather rare piece (Rotastak has discontinued it, I think,) so sadly Jazzy didn't live long enough to see it arrive in the post, but I did buy it with her in mind. Since the two hamsters I will be getting will be syrians, the whole lot has been separated into different systems, since the two *will not* mix, due to their species' solitary nature. However, I think I've povided plenty of space and fun for each and I plan to add further to my collection!
Every vertical tube is equipped with a ladder, since hamsters need to gain strength and learn how to actually climb the tubes, especially if they are young or are used to one small single cage (very possible, if it is a 'rescue' hamster.) Water and food is available in every cage, just in case the hamsters are jittery and don't have the confidence/skill to move around the whole set-up, at first. That way, no hamster will go hungry/thirtsy if it decides to stay in one cage, to acclimatise. All sleeping areas have soft, tissue-type, rodent-safe bedding to ensure sweet dreams and snacks to gnaw on during a mid-day feast!
I'd love to hear what you think! Any other preparations you think I could make?

  • wow how much money did u spend on thAT

  • Couldn't possibly tell, you as I've bought it piece by piece, over the last 13 years. Some of it really is that old, so I figure it's good value for money. Other brands I have bought have cracked, broken or become worn after just a year or two.

  • How do you clean the cages and how often?

  • I clean everything at least every 10 days at the most, but my girls are toilet trained, so that cuts down on mess. I wash it in warm, soapy water, on stained pieces (hamster urine can do that,) I use a mix of water and apple-cider vinegar to disolve build-up. After rinsing and drying it thoroughly, I reassemble it and add lots of bedding. I do 2 or 3 cages a day, but the ones that are used more often (the ones they sleep in,) get cleaned twice a week, as they are used more.
