"blessed are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kind of calumnies against you for my sake".

A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief was the favorite hymn of Joseph Smith, Jr. The hymn was introduced to the LDS movement by Apostle John Taylor, who learned the hymn in 1840 as a missionary in England. On the afternoon that Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were killed by a mob in prison in Carthage, Illinois, on June 27, 1844 (165 years ago) the Smiths had requested that Taylor, also in prison, sing the hymn twice.

Joseph Smith, Jr. and Martin Luther King, Jr. were respectively assassinated at the age of 38 and 39.

King was shot at 6:01 p.m. April 4, 1968 while he was standing on the second floor balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. The bullet entered through his right cheek smashing his jaw and then traveled down his spinal cord before lodging in his shoulder. According to Jesse Jackson, who was present, Kings last words on the balcony were to musician Ben Branch, who was scheduled to perform that night at an event King was attending: Ben, make sure you play Take My Hand, Precious Lord in the meeting tonight. Play it real pretty.

  • @SomEnSvane Phil Kesler of Voicemale was the lead on that song. Search for them on the web and you'll find more of their music; they are amazing.

  • This song is sung by Voicemale, an acapella group and they are great. The "lead" singer for this song was Phil Kesler who passed away February 2010 from cancer.

  • this song is sung by Voicemail, an acupella group. The "lead" singer of this song is Phil Kesler who passed away in 2011 from cancer. My family and I love their music.

  • wow. Didn't know about Dr. King's last words. That's way cool.

  • If you research, you will also find the LDS church does have many of the same ideals of Gandi and MLK. There is just a time and a place for everything, with all the persecution placed on them, they may not have been able to take any more pressure from others around them. All men are created equally. I'm sorry if you've been offended in any way. However, we must move forward and continue to progress to become more like our Savior.

  • Sehr gut..... Ich liebe die Kirche!

  • @redwoodrebelgirl I have been a member of the church for 19 years and I can say that the LDS church absolutely preaches equality of all and is certainly committed to peace and nonviolence. As a church, we put millions of dollars and more importantly, millions of service hours every year into humanitarian efforts around the world. As a member of the Church, I follow President Hinckley's directive not to even watch violent movies. For more information, visit mormon.org.

  • Beautiful song. Beautiful men of God. Thank you for this.

  • Man I love this song. So lyrical and beautiful. I'm not Mormon whatsoever and I actually think they're pretty sick in the head. Nonetheless, I absolutely LOVE their hymn book.

  • Teared up instantly. as soon as the first word was sung
