How long does the grey apple screen stay there before the computer finally starts up?

hi there! i was wondering if you don't backup your computer, is it possible to keep all your files?

@gossipgirlrox18 Yes, you won't lose your files doing Repair Disk from Disk Utility. However if you find an unrepairable disk and can't access your files, I recommend making a dmg image backup from Disk Utility (Click "New Image", save to EXTERNAL hard drive). It will save a lot of potential heartache.

when i insert the mac os x installation cd and try to start up my mac with it by pressing C nothing happens.. all it does is stays on the apple logo for a bit with the loader wheel and then it goes to a grey screen saying to restart my computer in a bunch of different languages.... and thats all it does each time i do this. how do i make it work? if you can please inform me.

@Destroymaster100 by startup volume I mean the operating system disc. Do the same thing as instructed in the video at about 1:40 to run Startup disk again to boot from your hard drive after it repairs.

@221desi It's not very long. I usually hold it down till the Apple comes up.
