Cameron Carpenter plays a 16-rank early-1970s Casavant two-manual organ at St. Peter's Anglican Church in Toronto following an interview. Recorded in mono, then played back to an iPhone, so sound quality is very poor.
@jazzy6307 Liberace comes to mind, but Carpenter doesn't need a string orchestra backing him. He's the whole show, self sufficient, carrying 100% of the music by himself. I like his "Jingle Bells" on itty bitty Casio keyboards, too.
@jensaks Thank God that Cameron is willing to carry this baggage to the world. As most organists are rapidly rushing into the 18th century, Carpenter sees a vision and sound for the 21st century. If you know him, you would realize rather soon that his is NOT full of himself, but amazingly humble. It is his brilliance that shines in both his discourse and his musical imagination. Bravo, Cameron.
@IRememberTheOldDays Cameron reminds me so much of Liberace 50 years ago: no-one liked him when he first started out either, but just think of all the joy he gave to so many people over the years! He just blew the lid off concertising and the piano, and brought it to life, just like Cameron is doing now, for the organ!
He complains about pipe organs and how unnecessary they are, but his digital organs are made of recorded pipe organ sounds. I think the whole digital organ thing is interesting, but to scorn and scoff at pipe organs is pedantic and arrogant. He NEEDS them to produce the sounds he's after on the digital organ. He's so full of himself. Yes, he's a good musician, but his attitude makes him impossible for me to listen to. There are many other fine, fine organists who don't come with his baggage.
Ill admit that he's talented in certain respects, extremely so, but he is not one of the modern greats, not by a long shot. Ian Tracey is the chap the see! And Im sorry but whats with the cross dressing on the organ console, I know hes of alternate sexuality but really?
