Out-spoken atheism has gotten atheism farther than any other method. The outspoken atheists write books, organize, fight in courts, and "speak out."

Some other contributing factors: We have been hardwired by evolution to attribute agency (i.e. mind, intention) to the inanimate. You even see this behavior in animals (dogs sometimes expose their bellies in a submissive gester in response to thunder). There is an obvious survival value to assuming everything is alive & possibly dangerous, but it has also left us vulnerable to believing in nonsense, especially when we confront something particularly stressful or frightening (e.g. death).

Finally, if you can come up with a compelling reason why someone might believe in god other than the obvious, tell us. So far you haven't even been able to articulate why u assume additional motive without effectively describing things related to death. One has to wonder why you're looking for additional explanations for something already quite adequately explained. You haven't even mentioned any of the better known contributing factors, such as our brain's capacity for 'religious experience'.

... 3rd, there's a difference between understanding a person & understanding why they believe in god. Look at it empirically: there's no compelling evidence for god whatsoever, not even a deductive argument that can withstand critical scrutiny, yet there is obvious psychological motive 2 believe (2 give meaning 2 a meaningless, finite existence); no mystery here. Heck, most believers will concede this more readily than u! No offense, but I've a sneaking suspicion ur not really an atheist. ;)

First, "no atheists in foxholes" is a popular expression I used to illustrate a point. It's not clear what your counterpoint is here, but if it's that you're aware of atheists that have been in foxholes, it's not relevant to the point. 2nd, god can have more than one function in society w/o having more than one motive for belief. Hell, I don't believe in god yet I can imagine ways in which the concept may be useful (e.g. Saying "GOD IS WATCHING YOU!" may just work on certain criminals)...
Duh! I just realized! I was happening upon perspectivism!

I disagree with saying that atheism a sociological "phase." (If it is a phase, it will last a lot longer than anything to date.) Polytheism was a phase because it proved to be untrue. Monotheism will end up being a phase, because it's just as false as polytheism. It's declining, and we're rising to take its place. Atheism--HUMANISM--will last as long as there is a human race.

You are absolutely right, that's why I said "this outspoken atheism." By that I mean not the philosophical thought, but the reactionary obsession which became popularized with Dawkins and still exists but less so.
