MaximsNewsNetwork: 27 October 2010 -- UNICEF: Lima, Peru -- Danny Glover UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador visited Peru to support UNICEF's Buena Onda campaign which is a social mobilization and fund raiser aimed to improve the living conditions for Peruvian children; the visit first took Glover to the Amazon region of Ucayali. Accompanied by UNICEF representative Paul Martin, they travelled to the remote community of Nuevo Saposoa which is the home of the indigenous group Shipibo Conibo - the Shipibo represent almost nine percent of the Peruvian indigenous population.

The group visited the community's primary school where all six graders learn in the same classroom. The classes are taught in Shipibo language.

Regions with highest percentage of indigenous population are those with the lowest scholastic performance. This is why UNICEF Peru has been working under an intercultural bilingual approach in order to improve the quality of education for this population.

During 2009, Peru was pronounced a middle income country but despite its economic growth and prosperity it still has great challenges, especially among the indigenous people.

Back in Lima, Glover visited a WAWA WASI or "House of the children", an early childhood care center where children under four years with mothers at work or at risk and living in poverty are provided with care during the week.

In Peru, 50 percent of children under the age of three suffer anaemia. In Wawa Wasis, children receive multi micronutrients along with balanced meals in an effort to reduce the occurrence of anaemia.

The Buena Onda Campaign is intended to raise awareness and make people sensitive to children's issues. The presence of UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Danny Glover puts the campaign on the spotlight mobilizing more Peruvians to support it across the entire country.

SOUNDBYTE (English) Danny Glover, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador:
"I'm proud very proud to be here with my brothers and sisters of the Shipibo community. Gracias. "

SOUNDBITE (English) Paul Martin, UNICEF Representative, Peru:
"Peru has advanced tremendously the national government committed itself to greatly diminishing infant mortality and chronic malnutrition and here in Peru that is happening. It's happening much faster than other countries in the region. Part of the reason is public policies but an important part is the commitment of the public to help make that a reality."

SOUNDBYTE (English) Danny Glover, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador
"None of us live on island, whether you are wealthy or middle income, around you is another world. And, 'Buena Onda' means that we want to look at this other world and see if we can be participants in making changes in this world, see if we can help people, see if we can extend our hand and at the same time feel good about it."
