1950s TV and music: A demonstration of the "theremin", an electronic instrument which became famous for being played without being touched. This segment aired live, presumably in the early 1950s, and presumably recorded via kinescope. "You Asked for It" was a long-running television series which showed things requested by the viewers at home. It started on the now defunct DuMont Network before moving to ABC-TV.

  • The song is Sonata ¹14 by Beethoven

  • It's hard to believe that this instrument was invented before the oscilloscope was!

  • The use of this instrument in many older science fiction movies was a stroke of genius. I still get chills up my spine watching movies with a theremin in the music score. The Day the Earth Stood Still is a fine example of how hair-raising this instrument can be. Forbidden Planet was another gem. So was the original The Thing.

  • I have never seen anything like this and I can't belive I live in 2010 and this existed in 1950s. Truly incredible.

  • Theremin? sounds like the name for some new fangled pain relief product .. cool video...

  • Great post!

  • AWESOME, thank you!
