Monday night, July 20, 2009, Governor Schwarzenegger agreed to open the coast of California to oil and gas drilling. Drilling could take place within the next year off the coast of Santa Barbara. Until recently, Gov. Schwarzenegger has been a long time opponent to offshore oil drilling, saying that our coasts are a "state treasure" and efforts should be directed to developing new, cleaner sources of energy instead of fueling our dependence on oil. In light of the state budget crisis, the governor has agreed to a finalized budget proposal that allows Texas-based Plains Exploration & Production Co. to use a platform in federal-government-controlled waters and slant drill into state waters off the Santa Barbara coast. It is too risky to allow more drilling off the coast of California. The benefits of an oil-drilling free coast far outweigh any monetary gain the state might see. Oil drilling is a quick fix, which will have long-term detrimental effects to the environment that Californians will be stuck with long after the contracts have expired and the big oil companies have left. Oil drilling is a damaging process that will pollute our beaches, kill our wildlife, and leave our coasts dirty and irreparable. Our coastal economy makes huge profits from visitors attracted to our coast, and California can not afford to lose on of its most profitable industries.
The big Oil corporations are trying their best to stop free energy ideas from spreading to common ppl.
We need to put an end to this corruption ,start generating ur own electricity now.
