Your question is based on a spectacularly stupid premise that we are "wasting [money] in space".

You do realize that the solutions in the two domains, space exploration/technology and global problems like world hunger are not mutually exclusive? Not just that, but it would be detrimental to focus on just one problem space. All these different fields drive innovation with side effects that reach further than you could imagine into other fields. Just look at some of the side-effects of NASA.
