My take on it:

1 - Cops find the girl's naked dead body.

2 - Mother waits anxiously for any news of the whereabous of her daughter (the girl).

3 - The girl wanders off.

4 - The girl is tortured by the men (aliens?)

5 - The cops inform the parents of their daughter's death.

funny how so many people try to interpret Lynch in with all these "logical" explanations - you can take what you wish, of course - but I think it's far more visceral than that.
