The thing is there are different types of wheelchairs. Some wheelchairs would work in going up/down escalators and others wouldn't !!!

youre my hero man i'm in a wheel for 7 years, i dont have the upper body strength you do, but I wish I could do this, getting on elevators sometimes is hassel.

I also got stopped for speeding at Waterloo station. Well, I was desperately in need of the toilet, and you -know- how long it takes to find the disabled toilet, and then find someone who shouldn't be is in it, or the key has been lost. So I knew I had to burn some rubber. Plus the concourse was so beautifully smooth and vast, a veritable wheelchair heaven when compared with the bloomin army assualt course they called the streets!

I tried taking the escalator with my wheelchair on the London Underground system here in the UK about 5 years back? Although I got up and stepped out of it. I use a chair to allow me to sit down most of the time, reducing pain + saving energy.
I think I would have been fine, but the staff were having none of it. I got shoo-ed away from the escalator before I even tipped my castors up! Talk about thwarted plans. I think I end up getting escorted to some far off lift (elevator).

true, and while i'll give that it's most likely thats what happened, we still can't truly confirm that, he could have messed with it, then put his hand back on the railing and slipped, but we can't 100% confirm that. anyways yea, other then that, its pointless to speculate.

I actually had a mall cop come up to me once and tell me that it was against mall rules for me to use the escalator. I asked him to show me the "mall rules" where it specifically says that a person in a wheelchair is not allowed to use escalators, otherwise he was going to be in the middle of a discrimination lawsuit. That shut him up very quickly.

Does it work as well w/ the high backed manuals?

Hi, aeris311. It should work as well. I haven't used a high backed chair in years and have only done this with low backed chairs, but I don't see the height of the back causing any problems. The main thing is to be sure you have good gripping strength. Only you can evaluate that. If you have good gripping strength, the only other thing is DON'T LET GO. I know it should be obvious, but the guy who falls in the video does just that.

well actually, the vid doesn't show the guy at the point when he falls, so we don't know whether he let go, or his hands just slipped. :\

Actually (and you may not see it in all the videos of him that are posted here on YouTube), there's a very brief, VERY brief period where he takes his hands off the rail and starts to mess with his front casters. The camera then cuts away from him and the next thing you see is him tumbling down. I had to play it through several times to catch it, but it's there.

The first time my wife saw me do that, she stuck real close behind me to provide support (she's trying to help, right?) and two friends got on the escalator right behind her. When we got to the top, I couldn't wheelie over the threshold so all three of them fell down in a pile...you had to be there.

I was going up an escalator at DFW International trying to make a connection flight and heard some woman screaming "Oh, please, somebody help that man! Help that man!" I start looking to see who's in trouble when I hear my wife say, "Shut up, lady. He does this all the time." I was the guy in "trouble" and the woman was having a meltdown. Screaming, crying, mascara running down her cheeks. SERIOUS overreaction. I've never had a mishap and I use escalators on a daily basis.
