I uploaded the opening by itself for this game a long time ago and finally got around to putting up a few videos for it. Being developed by the same people who made Guardian War (aka Powers Kingdom) for the 3DO (and it CLEARLY shows), Mystaria was released in the U.S., PAL, and Japanese territories, but was oddly reprinted in the U.S. shortly afterwards with the name "Blazing Heroes", which has a few adjustments to the dialogue.

While Mystaria is stated to be the rarer of the two (and the only one to oddly say it's a Sega Saturn exclusive... aren't both only for Sega Saturn?), I've never even SEEN a copy of Blazing Heroes in the wild. It doesn't bother me much though... Mystaria sounds cooler anyway. Anyhoo, this game has a fair deal of depth for a Saturn Strategy game, with the combat system being a "reworked" Guardian Wars engine. Instead of using different "bodies", you can learn skills and assign them to various slots. The game is relatively straightforward and organized, providing descriptions for items and abilities, and there are a fair deal of characters to use.

Both this game and Guardian Wars are/were decent displays at the time of what the Saturn and 3DO could do. Some people might look at these games today and barf, but these were some of the early Japanese 32-bit Strategy games.

  • So it's like a poor mans' Shining Force

  • @therealbluedragon Well, it depends how you look at it. On one hand, it doesn't have the name recognition of Shining Force and looks pretty bland by comparison. On the other hand, considering the Saturn didn't get a strategy-based SF title until pretty much 1998, about 2 and a half years after Mystaria/Blazing Heroes came out, this was a rather compotent early strategy game for the Saturn. I also think the gameplay is more sophisticated in Mystaria.

  • @Vysethedetermined2 Worth a buy?

  • @steve5123456789 Sure; I personally would pay upwards to 25 or so dollars for it...maybe slightly more, though I paid about half that much for mine. It's worth a buy though, especially since Sega Saturn doesn't have too many RPGs anyway.

  • Even if the game is a bit slow paced, it is one of the most interesting Tactical-RPG I played. I terms of strategies, it is a lot more complicated than Shining Force III.

  • i think worth a buy. just repicked it up 13 years later for 12.00 to fi nd out my saturns disk drive went bad.

  • good game i loved that lizard dude u get later

  • Ahh i remember this game..It was fun..The battle with bane and all his genreals was epic lol

    Gab GameOne gute Kritiken?

Das Spiel ist gerade auf dem Weg zu mir und ich musste (Complete in Box) nur 12€ zahlen! =)

  • do they offer this game in any combo pack like they did recently in sonics sega colletction for the ps3 and 360?

  • I like Shining Force 1 and 2 better but the skills and strategy are much more developed and interesting in Mystaria. And the learning curve is very interesting (similar to Daggerfall's)

  • This is one of my favorite Saturn games :D. I must of rented it out at least 5 times.

The day I find a copy will be a fantastic day indeed. :D

I will have to do a review on Mystaria when I return in 3 - 4 months.
