  • After reading the Discourse on the Origin of Inequality I felt that Rousseau wouldn't say that humans are social. I thought he argued that we were fine on our own in the state of nature until external pressures forced humans to interact to overcome difficulty. The only extent to which I can understand Rousseau as saying humans are social is when he argues that we have a sense of pity which moderates some of our behaviour relating to others.

  • @KikiManini Thanks for your comments. I have lived in France for about 5 years & taught teachers in Bossey, Switzerland, a place dear to Rousseau. I have read again & again the original text in French, as I find English translations are off. I agree with you that he argued we were fine in the state of nature, but that does not mean we were not social. Sociability is one thing; corrupt relationship is another. I also have read his other writings in the original French.Best wishes 2u

  • @cardinalcool

No problem. Thanks for getting back to me all the same :)

  • @mad11red For you first question, this is pretty complex, but I don't know any article or video about it, but you can read the first 1/4 of "Émile ou de l'éducation" and you will get the answer.

Now, sorry about my poor english, and sorry about the late answer, you probably found better somewhere else at this date!

  • Just a question: How do I know when a child tacitly agrees and when it tacitly submits. (is there a difference?)

I think that's also relevant for governance (with regards to specific systems or laws, the calculation problem, etc.).

I would be interested in Rousseau's approach as well as your own, but I'm merely curious so I don't wish to take your time. I'd be especially grateful if you could point me to accessible and concise sources (like a video or article, preferably not a book).

    Thanks!
