This is me controlling traffic on Vatsim as Melbourne Approach (ML_APP) during Vatpac (Vatsim Pacific division) event "Panic Stations Melbourne 2"

The aim of the event is, on the pilot side. to land as close to 8:30pm Eastern Australia Standard Time (10:30UTC) as possible. (and the winner of this event landed 50 seconds after 8:30)

This of course presents a challenge to ATC, with a large swarm of arrivals suddenly appearing at the airport's inbound routes all estimating to enter the runway at the same time, high capacity loadings, and delaying vectors or holding patterns need to be used to keep all the aircraft from being at the runway at the same time (or trying to occupy the same airspace at the same time). For a good 40 minutes, about 10 minutes before 8:30, through to 9pm and beyond depending on how much traffic takes part, there is chaos on the airways as we intake a huge load of aircraft in a short space of time. (perhaps more in 1 hour than the real airport handles for that hour... lol). It's a challenge, and a load of fun for both sides of the (radar) Scope. I rarely film my ATC endeavours (since it's usually not buisy enough to be that interesting) but in this case I made an effort to show you guys what "The other side" of the Radar looks like. at least on Vatsim in Australia.

Here I am using the TAAATS display mode in VRC, which simulates the Australian system. (if you wish you can read more about this system here at http://www.science.org.au/nova/038/038key.htm )

VRC and Vatsim is free. There is no cost to download and use the VRC program, nor any subscription fee to join or use Vatsim, however you will need to complete a competence test before you recieve the rating to control traffic.

The VRC Client can be downloaded at
http://www.metacraft.com/VRC/

The main vatsim site is

the Pacific Division of Vatsim is Vatpac, which can be found at

  • Dum vatsim! i logged onto to be a controller with all the sector files, the setting and such! But when i log on as a tower or ground or anything, it says its not connected in when i connect it! Basically if i wann be tower or ground and connect it,it disconnects me! any ideas?

  • @gryffindorhouse122 At a wild guess you havn't been Controller rated? If you have, ask your last mentor Instructor or the forums if it's a technical problem. If you havn't been controller rated yet you may only have authorization to log in as an Observer (or pilot flying). If that's the case, contact the region you want to control in and they should give you instructions on your obs hours and arrange the test(s) you take to get the controller rating.

  • Hey mate. Great video!! I control around Liverpool and Manchester area, and i heard its against the rules to record Vatsim sessions, is that true? Im thinking of making a vid ;)

    Many thanks

  • absolutley not true. it's a game/hobby afterall. It's against the rules (law) to record ATC (like real live broadcasts of real aircraft and ATC with real physical objects moving in the sky) in Great Britain (not in USA or Australia, it's a War Legacy law apparently in England) but Vatsim isn't a real broadcast regarding the security of real actual aircraft, so the law wouldn't apply in the hobby/internet case.

  • what rating are you currently?

  • @musicalaviator thanks sooo much! it worked. Im actually just a recently join Vateud (europe member) and ive only been at this for about 4 days, and havent any training. thats right. thanks again

  • @Jack1997LAN I'm prolly the last guy you want helping with the controller software. Out of all 5000 hours I'v had on Vatsim, less than 300 hours has been as ATC :P - If you are controlling in Australia, it up the vatpac dot org forums. If elsewhere then prolly the vatsim dot net forums. There's guys up there that are way more experienced than I am with the software.

  • nice video!

  • No, its not.

It can get pretty tough and crazy some times, and yes, a bit stressful.. but its just a game.

  • Great job, I'm working on S1 rating at Detroit, anyone who just flies on vatsim but is interested in controlling needs to start, it's alot of fun.

  • In SB options swich the voice output to a 'wav'. Makes a huge difference to stuttering.
