Her hair was naturally lighter when she was younger, but I've read somewhere not quite up to the blonde shade it appeared sometimes. I read it was gently lightened for film. And YES they colored kids' hair in those days. Check out a film of "The Little Rascals" where Darla Hood's hair was dyed blonde for one of the films, but she was normally a brunette.

  • Shirley could tap, it's a shame Shirley never got into pointe for the ballet one, that would been awesome, course I like it the way it is too.

  • @hellopinkjelly She started films when she was about 3 years old. At that time she was a light strawberry blonde. Her hair naturally darkened as she got older to a dark auburn. Then as an older adult, long after her movie days when she became an a ambassador, she colored it darker and eventually made it black. Perhaps she thought it was a more dignified shade than red. Or perhaps she wanted it to be very different from the shade it was when she was a child star.

  • So she went from blonde to brunette?
